Anesthesia practices are confronted with an ever-altering health care landscape that changes not only how they provide patient care but also how they support their practice operations. Facing these challenges requires not only utilizing traditional methods well, but exploring options that change the way we view the provision of care. Technological advances drive options for both patients and providers, and understanding them will allow practices to view further opportunities for improvements. Anesthesiologists must also aggressively participate in leadership at all levels of their practices, their facilities and their organizations. Knowing how to gain the skills to effectively transition from clinical practice to leadership will continue to ensure that clinicians have a voice in patient care. New regulations regarding operations and reimbursements permeate the growth and well-being of various groups, large and small, private-practice and academic, and independent and employed. CMS and private payers are constantly changing the requirements for quality outcomes linked to payments, regulations continue to add non-clinical burdens, and lack of leadership development and deficiencies in strategic planning create impactful problems on practice health and stakeholder relationships. Managing such challenges through knowledge and experience is essential to planning and development.
