ASA Monitor 10 2019, Vol.83, 58-59.
At the October 1988 ASA Annual Meeting in San Francisco, a group of anesthesiologists were invited to panel a discussion on clinical anesthesia and O.R. management. During the course of this panel, the group realized that the challenges and obstacles discussed were common and could potentially be solved in an open forum consisting of clinical directors with the same experiences. The next year, the Association of Anesthesia Clinical Directors (AACD) was formed, with Robert Jones, M.D., M.B.A., as the first president. The mission and vision of the AACD is much the same now as it was 30 years ago: Dedicated to Unparalleled Operational Efficiency.1  We are rooted in the belief that anesthesiologists are in the unique position to direct and manage the clinical and administrative operations within the hospital setting. However, collaboration and communication across specialties and services is emphasized. Nurses, surgeons, interventionalists and chief executives are important stakeholders in today’s health care environment and have contributed immensely to our growth.
