The ASA fully recognizes and appreciates the burden placed on health care personnel subsequent to the requirements outlined in AORN’s 2015 Guideline on Surgical Attire, particularly the onerous mask-changing recommendation as you described in your letter. Through lengthy and numerous discussions between the Committee on Surgical and Procedural Anesthesia (COSPA) and the Association of periOperative Registered Nurses (AORN), a healthy collaboration between our Guideline Advisory Boards has resulted in a much-improved, evidence-based guideline as summarized in the May 2019 ASA Monitor article titled “ASA Engagement with AORN Results in Surgical Attire Burden Reduction.” Recommendations regarding surgical mask changes have been removed from the 2019 update. Your letter highlights the necessity of these ongoing collaborations, which are most effective when they are routine and preemptive.
