In the hyper-political world where we all practice medicine today, anesthesiology citizenship begins and ends with fostering active relationships and maintaining an ongoing dialogue with your elected officials. Engagement with your federal and state lawmakers, executives and regulators is one of the most important advocacy missions that a physician anesthesiologist can choose to undertake.
Every member of your anesthesia group can contribute to a better awareness of how patient safety goals can be best achieved through physician anesthesiologists leading the anesthesia care team. This gold-standard paradigm of care is being challenged constantly in the political and regulatory arenas. There are multiple avenues in which ASA members can participate, directly via personal engagement, financially through national and state component society PACs, and indirectly by providing clinical coverage for the more politically inclined members of your organization to venture to Washington, D.C. or your state capital on your behalf.
