ASA is divided into the Divisions of Administrative, Scientific and Professional Affairs. This month’s Administrative Update focuses on the economic work produced by the Division of Professional Affairs. It is my privilege to lead the Division in partnership with Chief Advocacy and Practice Officer Manuel Bonilla and Section Chairs Dr. Joseph Szokol and Dr. Neal Cohen.
The Division of Professional Affairs is the bridge between ASA’s substantial scientific, educational and clinical work and the worlds of business, regulation and the law. The Division engages in advocacy on many fronts in order to fulfill ASA’s mission of Advancing the Practice and Securing the Future of anesthesiology. While that advocacy work is often associated with the U.S. Congress and state legislatures, it equally involves significant work with other governmental entities such as the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) and the Veterans Administration, and nongovernmental entities such as the CPT Editorial Panel (where CPT codes for all specialties are created), the Relative Value Scale Update Committee (which recommends specific work and practice expense valuations to Medicare), and the many Medicare Contractor Advisory Committees operated by the contractors that process and pay Medicare claims. There is one principle which applies here – “If you’re not at the table, you’re on the menu.” Ensuring that you and your patients are represented at health care’s many tables comprises the bulk of our work.
