60 Masks a Day and Counting

We are a group of pediatric anesthesiologists working in a care team model, routinely supervising three O.R.s at a time. Each time we enter an O.R., our institutional rules require that we put on a new mask and take the mask off upon exiting the room. It is typical for us to go in and out of each O.R. for every induction and every emergence and at least one visit during the case to see how things are going. In between O.R. visits, we perform preoperative assessments of patients. We are also required to remove our masks after setting up an O.R. and before we go to assist with transport of the patient to the O.R. We then apply a new mask as we are entering the O.R. along with the patient. This is very cumbersome and distracting.
