Which of the following complementary or alternative medical treatments has been shown to be as efficacious as ondansetron in the prevention of postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV)?
Postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV) is a common complication of anesthesia. Multiple mechanisms and triggering pathways have been elucidated, but treatment with drugs has not been 100 percent effective. Complementary and alternative medical treatments have been reported for the treatment and prevention of PONV. Inhaling alcohol vapor and aromatherapy with peppermint and other oils have been shown to have some efficacy treating nausea and vomiting when it occurs, but none have been shown to be effective preventive approaches.
