PRACTICE MANAGEMENT: The ASA Executive Physician Leadership Program

In 2015, the Committee on Practice Management and Committee on Large Group Practices envisioned a leadership course for ASA members. At that time, Jane Fitch, M.D., ASA Past President, formed an Ad Hoc Leadership Committee with Jeff Mueller, M.D., FASA, as chair and Joe Szokol, M.D., as vice chair. Ultimately, the partnership with Northwestern University’s Kellogg School of Management was created, and the ASA Executive Physician Leadership Program had its inaugural class in 2016. This partnership with Kellogg fits well not only due to the prestige of the school (in the most recent rankings of U.S. business schools, Kellogg is ranked #1 by The Economist, #4 by U.S. News & World Report, and #3 by Forbes), but also because of its philosophy of “thought leadership.” This philosophy, in our opinion, parallels the mission and strategic pillars of ASA. The course takes place over two weekends – the first in September and the second in late November/early December. Limited to 50 participants, course registration opens in May. Every year, it is sold out within two weeks and has a waiting list of several dozen. In November 2019, a four-day advanced version will be offered for the first time.
