Fostering Diversity Within ASA Leadership

ASA Monitor 6 2019, Vol.83, 16-17.
It has long been known that diversity throughout the ranks in medicine improves the care that a diverse population of patients receives as they engage in the health care setting. Most health care delivery systems have responded to this acknowledged fact by putting goals and strategies into place to diversify their leadership. This change has not gone unnoticed in other health care-related enterprises such as professional associations.
The hospital industry has been a major driver in trying to increase diversity in health care leadership with the realization that the U.S. will be a majority-minority country by 2043 and that diversity will be reflected even more in their patient population. Currently, about one-third of all patients in U.S. hospitals are members of minority groups.
