This month’s issue is titled “Practice Management: Facing Change, Finding Success.” Some of my previous editorials have covered the subject of change, mostly because my professional life has been frequently transformed under the influence of personal and family needs. Well, that has happened again. As you read this, I will have moved down the street in the Texas Medical Center, from UTHealth McGovern School of Medicine to Houston Methodist Hospital. I’m sure there will be more to say about that in the coming months, but remember the old adage, “the only constant is change.”
In the article “Change Management,” Dr. Simon and Captain Harden share with us a list of 10 ideas that make it easier to ensure an effective change. One of my favorites is their number four: “Leaders must have, and use, a clear and systematic plan of communication.” Most leadership failures I have witnessed have centered on poor communication. Even when those leaders insisted they were being transparent, it was the style of the message and lack of a clear plan of message delivery that left the leaders wallowing in mediocrity. Another of their importance points is that “leaders must walk the talk.” Leaders must be able to show their commitment to change; they must show that they care.
