Jerry A. Cohen, M.D., will receive the ASA Distinguished Service Award (DSA) at the ANESTHESIOLOGY® 2018 annual meeting in San Francisco, joining a list of luminaries that began with Paul M. Wood, M.D., in 1945 and which includes some of the giants in our specialty. The DSA is the highest tribute ASA can bestow upon a member and is given for “outstanding clinical, educational or scientific achievement, contribution to the specialty and/or exemplary service to the Society.”
Jerry Cohen’s career-long involvement in ASA reached its apex in 2012 when he served as ASA President during a time of great transition within the society and the specialty. In his various ASA officer roles, Dr. Cohen oversaw the implementation of a transformative management structure at ASA, he was a leading figure in the development of the Perioperative Surgical Home model, and he was instrumental in helping to create ASA’s first-ever strategic plan. This first strategic plan formulated the mission statement that guides our society to this day: “Advancing the Practice and Securing the Future.”
