It is evident that we are facing formidable times in our profession. Whether you are a physician anesthesiologist who has been practicing for less than five years or in practice for more than 20 years, our profession is in need of leaders who will shape the future. The current health care climate has resulted in physician anesthesiologists navigating through constant change and uncertainty.
ASA recognizes the growing need for physician anesthesiologists to actively lead within their departments, hospital organizations and at the state and national levels. The development of strong physician anesthesiologist leaders is essential to the vitality of our specialty and preserving physician-led patient care. Thus, under the vision of Drs. Jane Fitch, Jeff Mueller and Joseph Szokol, ASA developed a partnership with Northwestern Kellogg School of Management. This innovative leadership training is what medical education has historically lacked. Traditionally, medical education has focused on acquisition of clinical information and procedural competencies. On the other hand, the skills and knowledge required to effectively become a leader are centered on non-clinical tasks.
