Over the years, ASA has provided ethics resources to aid anesthesiologists in the care of their patients, their practice of medicine, and their participation in research and publication. These resources are available on the ASA website under “Resources” and “Ethics and Professionalism” ( The following are some of these resources:
The ASA Committee on Ethics Syllabus is a resource to aid anesthesiologists in the evaluation of clinical ethical situations. Topics in the syllabus include conscientious objection, the impaired physician, professionalism in anesthesia, research and publication ethics, patient protection, end-of-life issues: withdrawal of life-sustaining therapy and religious perspectives, futility, the ethics of fatigue, peri-operative do-not-resuscitate orders, practicing under altered standards of care, teaching professionalism, social media and online professionalism, informed consent, brain death, organ donation, conflict and communication, Jehovah’s Witness patients, and advance directives. Three chapters on pediatric ethics have been added to the syllabus on the following topics: do-not-resuscitate decisions, informed consent, and Jehovah’s Witnesses (
