Anesthesiology News quoted Andrew Herlich, M.D., in a June 2016 article titled, “Deaths of Children During Dental Procedures Raise Safety Concerns,” and published a letter to the editor by Karen Sibert, M.D., in response to the article stressing the importance of a physician-led pediatric anesthesia care team. Additionally, Dr. Sibert discussed the need to upgrade current regulations and standards regarding anesthesia administered to children in dental offices with ABC-TV in Sacramento in August and in October.
ASA launched a Children and Anesthesia campaign in July 2016 to help parents prepare their children for surgery. A news release and downloadable checklist for caregivers were distributed and featured on United Press International (UPI) and HealthDay, generating coverage in more than 53 news outlets. The release quoted Randall Flick, M.D., chair of ASA’s Committee on Pediatric Anesthesia, who said “Particularly in infants and toddlers, surgery is only recommended when it is necessary for the child’s health, so parents should not avoid an important procedure out of fear.” As part of the campaign, ASA and the American Academy of Pediatrics held a Twitter chat, which received 1.7 million impressions.
