Leadership is one of those sometimes intangible qualities, like good art, that we cannot necessarily define but that we are certain of when we see it. One of my favorite leadership quotes comes from General Douglas MacArthur. (I am partial to General MacArthur. He was in command of the U.S. and Filipino militaries when the Japanese invaded the Philippines on December 8, 1941. At that time, really only nine or so hours after the attack at Pearl Harbor, my grandfather, U.S. Army Captain Adolph “Ade” Hartung Giesecke, was in command of a company of Filipino soldiers. My grandfather did not survive the war, but General MacArthur returned in 1944 to liberate the Philippines from Japanese control. I also attended MacArthur High School in Irving, Texas. So there is a small, but significant, connection between me and General MacArthur.) MacArthur stated, “A true leader has the confidence to stand alone, the courage to make tough decisions, and the compassion to listen to the needs of others. He does not set out to be a leader, but becomes one by the equality of his actions and the integrity of his intent.”
