Committee on Professional Diversity Mentoring Program: A Success Story
ASA Monitor 05 2016, Vol.80, 56.
ASA Monitor 05 2016, Vol.80, 56.
Over the last year, I have been fortunate to be a part of the Mentoring Program of the ASA Committee on Professional Diversity. A little over a year ago while reading the ASA Monitor, I stumbled upon the experience of an anesthesia resident who, through the program, was active in designing policy and becoming a leader within our field. I was inspired to apply, and through the application process sought out my now-mentor Julian Goldman, M.D., whose research lined up well with my interests.
The ASA Mentoring Program has thus fostered the opportunity for Dr. Goldman and me to develop a mentor/mentee relationship and create research projects that we are actively working on. During the time we have worked together, we have created a prototype of an anesthesia-based mobile application that we plan to pilot. We will continue to work together in the realm of biomedical engineering/informatics to advance the field. The program has further given me exposure to someone who is incredibly active in ASA on a leadership level and who is guiding me to develop similar leadership skills.
