Leadership During a Time of Transition

By the time you read this article, the Department of Anesthesiology and Pain Management at the University of Texas (UT) Southwestern Medical Center will have done something that, from our understanding, no other institution has ever undertaken. We will have moved into two new hospitals within less than one calendar year. These events have allowed us to gain insight into leadership during a time of transition/disruption. As we are all aware, the practice of medicine is in a state of significant evolution. Steven A. Wortman, M.D., Ph.D., MACP, has described a new physics of patient care1  in which E = mc3: E is the emerging model of health care; m is the population, individually and collectively; and c3 is composed of c1 (care anywhere), c2 (care in teams) and c3 (care by large data sets). This succinct description by Wortman is occurring in medical practices across the country. On our campus, we are undergoing unprecedented expansion, which is leading to a unique environment as we simultaneously navigate transition and disruption.
