The world of medicine is changing at an amazing pace. Think of the terms that have become part of our common, everyday vocabulary in just the past decade: value, patient experience, culture of safety, metrics, process improvement, care coordination, readmission, Affordable Care Act, the “Triple Aim” and bundled payments.
But medicine has been changing for centuries, and the reason we have been so successful is that we do not run from change – but rather we embrace it. We challenge the status quo. As physicians, we are trained to constantly be thoughtful on how we make the world a better place. The desire to make things better is part of the reason we were drawn to medicine. Whether consciously or subconsciously, physicians have led change in countless venues and will do what it takes to enable this change. We have realized that we need to disrupt in order to build better lives for our families, our friends and patients. Disruption … disruption to make a better world.
