Resident-Led Physician Anesthesiologists Week at Brigham and Women’s Hospital

The anesthesiology residents at Brigham and Women’s Hospital (BWH) organized and implemented a hospital-wide celebration during ASA’s Physician Anesthesiologists Week, January 11-17, 2015. The purpose was to celebrate the extraordinary care that physician anesthesiologists provide as well as to promote awareness about the role of physician anesthesiologists in patient care. Additionally, we provided educational information to our department about the importance of political, legislative and regulatory advocacy. Participating residents included Mary A. Margaret N. Tillquist, M.D., Haun Wang, M.D., Raymond J. Malapero III, M.D. and Neelesh K. Anand, M.D.
After receiving email notification about Physician Anesthesiologists Week from ASA, a cohort of residents, including class representatives and active ASA members, organized a cohesive, week-long schedule of events. The events focused on celebrating physician anesthesiologists and their role in patient-centered, physician-led care. We obtained permission from our department’s program director, vice chairman and chairman, and assigned residents to lead specific events, which were financed by previous resident fundraising efforts.
