While 2014’s legislative session continues for about one-fifth of the states, most state legislatures have wrapped up. So far in 2014, there have been many new legislative, regulatory and legal efforts that could potentially affect anesthesiology. This mid-year ASA NEWSLETTER issue gives us the perfect opportunity to review some of what has been considered this year and what has already been signed into law.
AAs are highly skilled health professionals who work under the direction of physician anesthesiologists to implement anesthesia care plans. AAs have served patients as members of physician-led anesthesia care teams for more than 40 years. This year, states including Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan and New York considered AA legislation. In March, Indiana Governor Mike Pence (R) signed into law AA licensure legislation (P.L.58-2014, effective July 1, 2014) making Indiana the 17th jurisdiction to authorize AAs practice. A proposed regulation in Nevada would authorize delegatory authority for AAs under the supervision of a physician anesthesiologist.
