ASA Monitor 07 2014, Vol.78, 33-34.
The day I received the call informing me that my husband had sustained a cervical spinal cord injury playing hockey was the same day I sat with my younger sister when the oncologist told her she would not survive the year due to her metastatic breast cancer. In addition, my hair had just recently grown back from my own dance with breast cancer and chemotherapy. Only 10 days later, my elderly, frightened mother-in-law would die in my arms with no other family member present since her only son was lying in the Neuro Intensive Care Unit at the University of Michigan.
