The New Year holiday is a time to reflect on accomplishments of the past and the plans and promises of the future. We were all medical students and residents once, and for most of us the path from those times to our current position was far from straight and positively influenced by meeting new people and forming new communities. FAER aims to enlarge the community of scholars moving the specialty forward by its programs for medical students and residents. The Medical Student Anesthesia Resident Fellow (MSARF) program provides stipends to students for an eight-week summer research experience in anesthesiology and the opportunity to present their work at a symposium at the ANESTHESIOLOGY® annual meeting. The Resident Scholars Program (RSP) provides academic departments funds to send one of their residents to present research done during their residency at the same symposium. The goal of both programs is to foster community and peer-to-peer support in traversing a new career in science to advance the specialty.
