“The Future Starts Here” was the theme of ANESTHESIOLOGY 2018, and more than 14,000 experts and practitioners in the field of anesthesiology gathered for five days of learning and networking with their peers in the City by the Bay. We were also joined by colleagues from 83 countries. A diverse array of exciting new offerings awaited attendees as they traveled from near and far to attend the annual meeting. An engaged membership, well-attended educational sessions and busy networking events indicated a successful meeting. This truly was a grand celebration of our specialty.
At the Opening Session, ASA President James D. Grant, M.D., M.B.A., FASA, outlined the highlights of ASA’s advocacy on topics that are vital to our specialty: drug shortages, the opioid crisis and leadership. He also unveiled the new corporate identity and website. The lighthouse in the new logo pays homage to the ASA seal and history of the specialty. Based on the original seal adopted in 1932, it creates a dynamic image that expresses the important role of the physician anesthesiologist. It represents the physician anesthesiologist’s knowledge and skill in bringing the patient into and out of unconsciousness during surgery.
