Anesthesia practices face more challenges than ever before, and addressing these challenges will determine their future in the face of many changes they will encounter. Increasing clinical, regulatory, governance, reimbursement and personnel issues permeate the growth and well-being of various groups, large and small, private-practice and academic, and independent and employed. CMS and private payers are constantly changing the requirements for quality outcomes linked to payments; stressors challenge the well-being of physicians; regulations continue to add non-clinical burdens; and lack of leadership development and deficiencies in strategic planning create impactful problems on practice health and stakeholder relationships. Managing such challenges through knowledge and experience is essential to planning and development.
