Anesthesiology centers around the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of complications centered around injury. Whereas most research to advance medical care in our specialty focuses on the injury of surgery, anesthesiologists also apply these concepts to research after traumatic injury. Here are but three examples of FAER-funded investigators embarking on careers to advance the practice of medicine in this area.
Jacob Sunshine, M.D., currently funded under a FAER Mentored Research Training Grant (MRTG), studies prevention of mortality from trauma. Recent rises in motor vehicle crash fatalities have led policy makers to reevaluate automobile safety practices known to reduce risk of fatality. The Department of Health and Human Services, through its Healthy People 2020 initiative, sets goals for seat belt compliance across the nation. Using data from the ongoing Behavior Risk Factor Surveillance System, he measured for the first time seat belt compliance prevalence at the county level and assessed how each U.S. county was performing with respect to Healthy People 2020 compliance goals. “We found that as of 2012 (the most recent year for which county identifiers were available), 3,042 counties, or approximately 98 percent, had not yet achieved the Healthy People 2020 objective to be considered compliant,” states Dr. Sunshine. There is considerable variation in compliance by geography, with primary enforcement law states having higher compliance than states without such laws. In another investigation (Popul Health Metrhttps://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/29391033), Dr. Sunshine’s team measured the prevalence of self-reported alcohol-impaired driving episodes at the county level over a similar decade-long period and noted a similar, although broader geographic pattern.
