Public Education Campaigns Demonstrate Specialty’s Breadth and Depth

ASA Monitor 9 2018, Vol.82, 44-45.
A primary focus for the ASA Public Relations department is to continue to nurture a greater understanding and appreciation for the role physician anesthesiologists play in their patients’ care. This year, we’re focusing on three patient engagement campaigns showcasing different areas of the specialty where physician anesthesiologists make a difference – labor and delivery, children and anesthesia, and pain management.
For labor and delivery, we worked with a national business intelligence firm to conduct a 10-question survey on women’s experience with labor and delivery pain and its management. The survey of 912 American women, 18 years of age and older, with children ages 0-8, showed that women held some misconceptions about labor and delivery pain and pain management methods, such as how long into the labor process they can have an epidural and whether they can use more than one pain management method during labor.
