The ASA Charitable Foundation (ASACF) Global Scholars Program supports leaders in the specialty from low- and lower-middle income countries. The program strengthens the professional development of young leaders with fewer resources and advances the practice of anesthesiology overseas. New in 2018, the ASACF has partnered with the Society for Pediatric Anesthesia (SPA) and the World Federation of Societies of Anaesthesiologists (WFSA) to expand the Global Scholars Program to support 10 scholars.
In many of these countries, the risk of adverse events from anesthesia is 1,000 times greater than in the United States. There’s also a shortage of practitioners; for example, Uganda’s 40 million citizens are served by only 84 physician anesthesiologists. The Global Scholars Program enables several doctors to take part in an observership at a U.S. teaching hospital and attend ANESTHESIOLOGY® 2018 in San Francisco to learn and network with specialty leaders and bring insights back to their home countries to enhance patient care.
