Some of the universally recognized traits of great leaders include integrity, sincere enthusiasm, ability to communicate effectively, empowerment, decisiveness and loyalty.
Throughout his career as a physician, ASA leader and public servant, John M. Zerwas, M.D., has come to exemplify these traits and many more. It is for this reason that he has been selected as the 57th Emery A. Rovenstine Memorial Lecturer. The lecture is the namesake of a founding member of ASA known for pioneering work on cyclopropane, organizing the first-ever academic anesthesiology department (Bellevue Hospital in New York) and, perhaps most of all, as a mentor and leader who taught many of the early seminal figures in the specialty.
