Health care in the United States and worldwide is undergoing a transformation to focus on the concept of value.1  Even in the absence of federal mandatory programs, private insurers are embracing the concept of alternative payment models, including bundled care and population health. As anesthesiologists, we are rarely viewed as critical to population health, but that is clearly a misconception.2  Addressing the opiate crisis is one area in which we can have a profound impact. Ensuring perioperative brain health is a second area and the focus of the ASA Perioperative Brain Health Initiative.3  This patient safety initiative is now entering its second year, and this and the following article provide an update to the society on the exciting activities and goals planned for the forthcoming year.
