2017 is a “quiet” election year compared to last year, but every vote is important and all elections have consequences. While there are additional states with special elections this year, only two states have regularly scheduled statewide elections this autumn. New Jersey and Virginia will hold gubernatorial and legislative elections on November 7, 2017. Additionally, Virginia will elect a new lieutenant governor and attorney general. New Jersey and Virginia both enjoy large numbers of physician anesthesiologists; it is important that public servants are elected who will listen to these members and protect patient safety. Governors name members of medical and nursing boards, and some lieutenant governors determine the composition of important legislative committees. Legislators have immense power to change the manner in which anesthesia is provided in your state.
