The mission of the Society for Education in Anesthesia (SEA) is to “Support, Enrich and Advance anesthesia education and those who teach.” Founded in 1985, the society has made incredible strides in the last few years to meet our mission, and our membership continues to grow. With this growth has come the ability to more actively support the educational efforts of the society’s members, including two new funded projects, the Phillip Liu Awards for Innovations in Anesthesia Education and the SEAd Grant.
The concept for the establishment of SEA developed at an ASA workshop on education in 1981. Seeing the enthusiasm of its participants and recognizing the need for more education-driven skills and activities, a group of dedicated clinician teachers decided to form SEA. Dr. Philip Liu was one of these founders and the first president of the society. Throughout his life, he was dedicated to the improvement of education in the field of anesthesiology. Upon his death, his family graciously chose to carry on his mission through the development of the Philip Liu Awards for Innovations in Anesthesia Education.
