Almost every day, news headlines report on the opioid addiction epidemic and the lives lost or changed forever. Physician anesthesiologists know firsthand that opioids can effectively help patients in pain when used appropriately and under a physician’s care, but also know the risks of addiction and overdose when misused. The specialty plays a key role in helping patients manage their pain and navigate their treatment options, including opioids, to find solutions that relieve pain without affecting quality of life.
To highlight the ways physician anesthesiologists improve the lives of patients in pain, I recently visited ASA member Anita Gupta, D.O., Pharm. D., to produce a video featuring her patient Kathleen Callahan.
