Note:The meaningful use automatic hardship exemption for physician anesthesiologists ends after the 2016 performance year. However, anesthesiologists may qualify for an exception under the Merit-Based Incentive Payment System (MIPS). ASA continues to work with CMS and the Office of the National Coordinator for Health IT (ONC) to identify how anesthesiologists can best use certified electronic health record technology (CEHRT) to improve the quality and safety of patient care.
Over the past few years, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) have presented several plans outlining both required and aspirational use of CEHRT for eligible clinicians. CEHRT has been a critical focus for ASA as our members prepare to participate in its requirements. ASA’s Quality and Regulatory Affairs (QRA) team works with ASA committees to represent physician anesthesiologists’ unique perspectives and the issues encountered when using CEHRT through ongoing advocacy to CMS and ONC. Most recently, ASA’s Committee on Electronic Media and Information Technology (EMIT) has been working closely with QRA to identify potential areas where an anesthesiologist should receive credit in MIPS for use of electronic resources.
