In an age of political uncertainty, one thing is certain: the value revolution in health care is here to stay. Like it or not, anesthesiologists, like all physicians, must shift their focus from a financial model based on procedure and time and toward optimizing outcomes while reducing costs. The “value agenda” was introduced 10 years ago in Redefining Healthcare, authored by Michael Porter and Elizabeth Teisberg. In his keynote speech at ANESTHESIOLOGY® 2016, Porter emphasized the key points surrounding redefining health care based on value, and urged anesthesiologists to embrace the changes coming our way and be at the forefront of the transition from volume-based payment toward creating value for the patient.
