John Paul Kampine, M.D., Ph.D., former chairman of the Department of Anesthesiology at the Medical College of Wisconsin from 1979 through 2005, peacefully passed away on the morning of October 14, 2016. He was at home with family at his side. John was a beloved leader at the Medical College of Wisconsin and a national icon in the specialty of anesthesiology. He was 82.
John grew up in Marathon, Wis-consin, the son of a general practitioner father and registered nurse mother. He received his M.D. from Marquette University Medical School [now the Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW)] in 1961 and his Ph.D. in physiology in 1965. He continued research training as a postdoctoral fellow at the NIH Laboratory of Neurochemistry.
