Update from ASA Committee on Patient Blood Management
ASA Monitor 08 2016, Vol.80, 52-53.
ASA Monitor 08 2016, Vol.80, 52-53.
The ASA Committee on Patient Blood Management underwent a slight name change a year ago by adding the word “Patient” to indicate the patient-centered nature of our goals and priorities. Other societies and recent publications from multiple specialties are also using the term “Patient Blood Management” (PBM). PBM has been described as the practice of medicine with regard to preventing and managing anemia, optimizing coagulation to reduce or prevent hemorrhage, promoting optimal blood conservation, and achieving all of these goals with an evidence-based approach in order to improve patient outcomes.
Forming alliances between ASA and other global and national societies is a part of the ASA strategic plan. In sharing our expertise with a multidisciplinary group of professionals, all of whom prioritize PBM, we believe that each respective society – and more important, our patients – will benefit. This sharing of ideas, knowledge, and expertise is the optimal team-based approach that is needed in order to enhance patient care and improve outcomes. Two such collaborations between our committee and other national societies are described here.
