Volunteers Needed for Overseas Teaching Programs in Rwanda and Guyana
ASA Monitor 07 2016, Vol.80, 37.
ASA Monitor 07 2016, Vol.80, 37.
The ASA Committee on Global Humanitarian Outreach is seeking volunteers for two Overseas Teaching Programs, in Kigali, Rwanda, and Georgetown, Guyana.
The Rwandan program was established in 2006 in collaboration with the Canadian Anesthesiologists’ Society. Anesthesia training was precarious in Rwanda. There were very few specialists with advanced medical training – an insufficient number to provide quality education to a new generation of anesthesiologists. Since then, ASA and Canadian volunteers have been providing educational support in four-week blocks, and the program has been successful in training and graduating several classes of Rwandan anesthesiologists. The program continues, now supporting the teaching efforts of the local anesthesiologists who have been trained thanks in large part to ASA member volunteers.
