ASA serves to advance the clinical science of anesthesiology, secure the future of the practice of anesthesiology, and to promote education and mentorship among its members. Becoming involved with your state society is an easy way to pursue all of these ideals, as well as gain leadership experience and other non-clinical skills applicable to medicine within your own state. Graduating residency with these additional skills that can be used inside as well as outside the O.R. is important and will be appreciated by the group or academic practice you join. In addition, laws that will inevitably affect your practice and ability to maintain your career start at the state level. It is for these reasons I encourage you all to attend your state society meeting in 2016. I guarantee you will come away with knowledge and connections you won’t be able to achieve anywhere else.
