More than 100 million Americans – nearly one third of the United States population – live with chronic pain. To help those with the condition and highlight the important role that physician anesthesiologists play in treating pain, ASA executed a variety of communications activities during Pain Awareness Month in September.
ASA conducted a proactive media relations effort sharing information on the importance of seeing a pain medicine specialist. A news release on the new technologies and techniques these specialists can administer was developed with the assistance of Richard Rosenquist, M.D., chair of the ASA Committee on Pain Medicine and chairman of the department of pain management at the Anesthesiology Institute at the Cleveland Clinic. The team secured a unique opportunity for Anita Gupta, D.O., to discuss pain medicine and new technologies with consumer health news website eMaxHealth.com. In a video interview and supporting bylined article, Dr. Gupta shared key messages including: “Don’t resign yourself to a life in pain. If you are one of the millions of people lacking an effective remedy for your pain, a trained pain medicine specialist may be able to help you achieve your pain management goals.”
