This past year, ASA refreshed its strategic plan, a process performed every three years. J. P. Abenstein, M.S.E.E., M.D., as ASA President-Elect, led this process with the help of consultants from Decision Strategies International (DSI). The process utilized some traditional strategic planning methods but focused as well on scenario planning, looking at environmental changes to produce best case versus worst case for ASA.
Why do strategic planning, whether for yourself, your practice or any organization? I think the first reason is to make sure we really are spending our time, resources and energy on what matters the most. In this information age, we are deluged with email, social media, meaningless meetings and other time sappers. Sometimes it is difficult to focus our time on what is really important – this holds true for our personal and professional lives. Sometimes we need to stop, take account of where we have been and, more important, where we want to go.
