After July 15, 2015, except for the circumstances listed below, only those individuals receiving formal training as an anesthesia technologist through a qualified training program can take the anesthesia technology examination.
Anesthesia technology is rapidly being recognized as an allied health profession. And, as a profession, anesthesia technologists and technicians contribute daily as members of the anesthesia care team. Difficult decisions are made frequently and quickly during the delivery of anesthesia care, and anesthesia technologists and technicians are needed to assist in the implementation of these life-saving decisions. Therefore, standardized training is vital.
To assist in this transition, ASA and ASATT are circulating information that will impact the anesthesia technology vocation. Anesthesia technicians will not be grandfathered to certified technicians. Certified technicians will not be grandfathered to certified technologists. Technician certification will be maintained through ASATT as long as currently certified technicians obtain the 20 CEs needed for re-certification every two years.
