The 2014-15 ASA Committee on Neuroanesthesia has identified educational resources in neuroanesthesia available to the membership, which provide ordinary CME credits for licensure maintenance and for MOCA® Part 2 (Lifelong Learning and Self-Assessment) requirements. We also list those resources that are free and which fill knowledge gaps resulting from the broadening of our clinical practice and from the growth in knowledge in neuroanesthesia and related disciplines, also including new educational opportunities for residents and fellows.
Several areas of active research and changing clinical practice merit consideration for educational updates, including neurophysiological monitoring, EEG and interventional neuroradiology procedures.
As progress continues in the understanding of how anesthesiologists can best contribute to the perioperative outcomes in the areas of interest to neuroanesthesia, it is critical that the ASA membership have access to up-to-date educational materials. Many management guidelines are published in non-anesthesia literature; for example, the level 1 evidence recommendation that methylprednisolone not be used in acute spinal cord injury (including, presumably, intraoperative injury) was published in Neurosurgery in 2013. The Society of Neuroscience in Anesthesia and Critical Care (SNACC) website provides educational resources available to non-members. Relying on member volunteers, the website updates cannot be frequent enough to reflect the latest developments. The ABA-approved, costly educational modules may be, by editorial necessity, obsolete when released.
