The Division of Scientific Affairs addresses ASA’s goal to advance science and education for physician anesthesiologists. Composed of 56 committees, sub-committees and editorial boards and more than 800 positions, the Division gives voice to the ideas of many involved ASA members.
ASA’s annual meeting remains the most popular educational offering. The ANESTHESIOLOGY® 2014 annual meeting in New Orleans attracted nearly 13,000 registrants, with 20 percent attendance from more than 80 countries outside the U.S. We are expecting that the 2015 meeting in San Diego will be an even greater draw. The annual meeting leadership, headed by Karen Domino, M.D., has refreshed the structure of the meeting for 2015, making it easier to navigate and to network. Looking into the near future, we physician anesthesiologists see greater roles as perioperative physicians, caring for and coordinating the care of our patients throughout the perioperative process. For some of us, this will take the form of a Perioperative Surgical Home (PSH), and the upcoming meeting will include daily sessions to address related topics. For most of us, we’ll need to broaden our education in perioperative medicine, for all practice settings, needing both medical knowledge as well as practice leadership knowledge. Recognizing the breadth of this opportunity and the scope of the need, the Committee on Academic Anesthesiology initiated a proposal for a new annual meeting track on perioperative medicine that will bring all this education together and make it easier to access. The Committee on Annual Meeting Oversight has endorsed this idea and it is likely to be part of our 2016 meeting. ASA’s other face-to-face meetings provide even more opportunities for members to learn and network, with the PRACTICE MANAGEMENT Conference, Anesthesia Quality Meeting and the Perioperative Surgical Home Summit.
