I would caution practices to avoid a “one-size-fits-all” approach to the older anesthesiologist. I am 72, as healthy and active as I was at 35, recertified voluntarily in 2008, and practice 90 percent of my time. I take both weekend and night call. I am the only anesthesiologist in my department who interrogates and reprograms CIEDs for surgery and am regularly assigned to staff a wide variety of cases, including vascular, chest, neurosurgery and OB. Nobody has suggested that my mental capabilities are declining. I have never been in court as a defendant. I am still one of the more productive members of my department.
