Guidelines are used to assist in the diagnosis and treatment of medical conditions through analysis and summary of important medical literature. Major health organizations have stated that the goal of practice guidelines is to deliver safer medical care. Given that guidelines often establish standards of best medical care, it is important that they be based on sound medical knowledge. Insurance companies, medical liability attorneys, government entities, and others may depend on guidelines in the work they do. Appreciating the dependence that many have on medical guidelines, the Institute of Medicine offers assistance in their development.
