2014 is a pivotal year for ASA. Drug shortages continue, potentially exacerbated by use of anesthetic agents as components of an execution. There are relentless attempts to increase the scope of practice of non-physician health care professionals. The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) continues to reduce professional payments and at the same time increase the requirements to report quality, with significant penalties for not reporting quality measures. Previous years’ Physician Quality Reporting System (PQRS) participation and performance will determine future penalties; 2014 will be the base year of comparison for 2016. Fee-for-service payment methodology is being challenged, with new bundled payment models proposed, while the debate on how to repeal or replace the Sustainable Growth Rate (SGR) formula remains unresolved.
