A recent large, retrospective cohort study examined the rates and outcomes of substance use disorder (SUD) in anesthesiology residents. Based on this study, which of the following statements is true regarding SUD?
A recent large, retrospective cohort study examined the rates and complications associated with SUD in physicians. The study included physicians who began anesthesiology training in the United States from 1975 to 2009. SUD was identified through three primary sources: 1) the American Board of Anesthesiology (ABA) database, which receives biannual information from residency training programs; 2) applicant reporting; and 3) the disciplinary action notification service of the Federation of State Medical Boards. Individuals whose records were flagged for reasons other than personal use of substances (e.g., inappropriate prescriptions) were excluded. A total of 45,581 individuals were screened by the ABA; 44,612 enrolled in primary anesthesiology training. Of these, 1,042 had SUD flags, and evidence for SUD was present in 384. Twenty-six of these physicians died (7.3 percent) within four years of beginning training. The overall rate of SUD among anesthesiology residents was 0.86 percent, or 2.16 per 1,000 resident years.
