ASA® President Jane C. K. Fitch, M.D. was interviewed by The Wall Street Journal in January on the importance of physician-led care for veterans. “When you have a veteran asleep on an operating table, seconds count, and all those years of additional training can make the difference between life and death,” said Dr. Fitch, a former nurse anesthetist herself. The article examined the U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs’ proposal to allow nurse anesthetists to practice without physician supervision.
ASA members Michael Alkire, M.D., Stuart Hameroff, M.D. and George Mashour, M.D., were quoted in a December New York Times article about what is known, what is not known and what is currently being studied regarding consciousness. A study published in Anesthesiology was also cited.
