As your Immediate Past President (IPP), this “Administrative Update” will be my 10th and last contribution as an ASA officer. It has been a distinct honor to have served as an ASA officer since 2003, culminating as your President in 2012-13; as past President John Neeld, Jr., M.D. (1999) was noted for saying, “Thank you for giving me the best job in the world this past year.” As a topic for this final year, I’ve chosen “ASA Exceptionalism” as the title of a few reflections as your IPP.
The first and perhaps most important component to ASA exceptionalism is the spirit of volunteerism among the membership. This is most dramatically demonstrated through the participation in our numerous committees. ASA currently has 100 committees being served by an equal number of chairpersons and more than 1,500 anesthesiologists as committee members. In addition, our House of Delegates reflects the truly grassroots democracy that drives our decisions and policymaking. With more than 500 delegates, alternate delegates and officers, as well as a robust reference committee practice, it is truly the voice of the practicing anesthesiologist that drives our most important decision-making. Very few other professional organizations can boast such involvement, which I believe contributes to our ever-growing membership that currently includes more than 52,000.
