ABA Staged Examinations System
ASA Monitor 07 2013, Vol.77, 61.
ASA Monitor 07 2013, Vol.77, 61.
To complement the article “Changes to the ABA Board Exams” by Katie Schenning, M.D. in the “Residents’ Review” section of the June 2013 NEWSLETTER, the American Board of Anesthesiology (ABA) would like to present additional information about its transition to a staged examinations program.
ABA candidates who will complete residency training on or after June 30, 2016 will be in the new Staged Examinations System, which will consist of three examinations.
The ABA’s current Part 1 (written) Examination will be replaced with a BASIC Examination, which will be administered at the beginning of a resident’s CA-2 year and an ADVANCED Examination, which will be administered after graduation from residency training. The current Part 2 (oral) Examination will become the APPLIED Examination and will include two components: a Standard Oral Examination (SOE) and an Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE).
